Parent Cues for Radical Week 1

Parent Cues for Radical Week 1

We have started a New Series for the Summer about the Gospel and being the Church.

Lesson Overview
Luke 14:25-33

Supporting Passages
Matthew 4:18-22; Luke 9:57-62; Philippians 3:1-14

Biblical Truth
Jesus calls people to give up everything and follow Him.

Context
Do you and your students believe that following Christ is worthy of abandoning all other pursuits and possessions? Valuing Jesus above all else is the beginning of a faithful relationship. This is not just for super-Christians; this is where Christ’s
invitation to followers began in the Bible. Do we believe that Jesus is so good, so satisfying, and so rewarding that we will surrender all we have and all we are to find our fullness in Him? Do we believe Him enough to obey Him and to follow Him
wherever He leads, even when the crowds in our culture—and maybe even in our churches—turn the other way? The cost of following Christ is great. However, the cost of not following Him is even greater. Who truly pays the price when we fail to take the gospel seriously?

Goals: Students will examine what it means to give up everything in their life in order to follow Jesus Christ.  Students will consider the cost involved in personally following Jesus.

Continuing the Dialogue:

These are questions to ask your student this week around the dinner table or in the car to continue to engage them in the discussion.

How does your current understanding of Luke 14 affect what you think it means to be Jesus’ disciple? Why do you think Jesus chose to use such strong language when talking about following Him?

Is following Jesus easy?  Should following Jesus be easy?  In what ways do we sometimes lead people to think that following Christ is easy?

What challenges do you face as Christ follower in being like Jesus and following Him?

In what areas of your life do you currently need to count the cost of following Christ?
Do you believe He is worth laying down everything for? Why or why not?

Parent Cue: The Church

Parent Cue: The Church

Over the next weeks we will be talking about the Church.
This past weekend we started our conversation about the church by reading through the scriptures to see what the Word had to say about the church in various places.
We ended with Acts 1-4.  In particular the verse below….

This was the beginning of the church.

Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”  40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.  42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Acts 4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.  32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

HAVE A CONVERSATION…

Sometime this week Ask your teen what they think the Church’s purpose is.  Follow it up with how they feel the Church is accomplishing it’s goal of fulfilling her purpose.
We will be dreaming this weekend about what their church would look like if we took what scripture said and tried to reach their friends today.  Ask them about their ideas.  Then if you are bold and able, figure out with them how they could go about accomplishing their ideas and reaching their friends for Christ.
